The former Lufthansa Tower
on the Deutz bank of the Rhine is getting a
new look. HPP Architects’ Cologne
office, led by partner, Remigiusz Otrzonsek won the design competition organised
by HOCHTIEF against seven other participants. The brief was to update the
former Lufthansa Tower
on the Deutz bank of the Rhine that was built
in the 70’s.
The design
of the new façade pays homage to the special urban location. The building
stands on the right bank of the Rhine, next to
the Cologne Rheinhallen and the grounds of the Rheinland Regional
Association.
Our aim was
to make the ensemble consisting of a tower block and a rectangular, terraced
block calmer and thereby to give the Rhine Promenade an architecturally
timeless look. This was achieved by uniting both tower and block by clothing
them in a glass façade.
In his
prize-giving speech, Prof. Wolfgang Döring, chairman of the jury said: “The
design has given the building clarity without taking away its unity.”
The maxCologne refurbishment is the second significant project for HPP
on the Deutz bank of the Rhine, the other is the
complete refurbishment and renovation of the Cologne Rheinhallen. This project
also resulted in an exciting dialog between old and new. With their timeless,
elegant design the architects were given the unique opportunity and
responsibility of making a permanent change to the face of the right bank of
the Rhine.
