The
modernisation of the BayArena is proceeding according to plan. The topping-out
ceremony took place this Thursday in Leverkusen.
Dusseldorf architects HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg &
Partner designed the scheme.
This “shrine”
to football was extended to accommodate over 30,000 fans during the course of
the works. This was achieved by adding an extra tier to the spectator stands
and resulted in an emblematic new stadium roof as well as a new four-storey
west wing on the lower floor of which is a new team area with a highly-modern
infrastructure. Further VIP, restaurant and press zones and new event areas
will also be provided on the other floors.
Work on the renovation began in December 2007 and is due to be completed
in time for the start of the new Bundesliga season and on 4 September the stadium
will host the national friendly match against World Cup hosts South Africa.
