WESTGATE, the new office and commercial building on Cologne’s Habsburgerring celebrated its topping-out ceremony today. The corona was hoisted onto the roof this afternoon in the presence of Cologne’s Lord Mayor, Juergen Roters and 200 invited guests consisting of politicians, local government representatives and business people. The clearly structured, 7-storey building is the result of a prize-winning competition entry from 2005 and is due to be completed in mid 2011. The client is Munich-based MEAG for the ERGO insurance group. The building will stand on one of the most important junctions in the centre of Cologne. The versatile building has already been awarded an EU Green Building certificate due to its environmentally-friendly design. WESTGATE already stands as a “gateway to the city” but should also serve as the impetus for the development of the surrounding Ring Area.
