After only 15 months in construction, the new Lecture Theatre of the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research at Muelheim an der Ruhr will officially be opened on Friday 30 April 2010. The building in clear, cubist language is a competition-winning design by HPP Architects from 2005. The new building with around 1,800 m² GBA will stand between the administration building and the listed laboratory building on the institute campus on Lembkestrasse, on the site of the former, outdated lecture theatre that was no longer able to meet the requirements of a modern seminar and communications centre. It will house the lecture theatre, seminar rooms and the exhibition rooms and will also form the new main public entrance to the Institute. Gerhard G. Feldmeyer will give a celebratory lecture entitled “Detail: the Vocabulary of Architecture” at the opening ceremony.
