The Olgahospital – a new Centre for Paediatric and Youth Medicine and the Frauenklinik – a new Gynaecological Centre are being constructed in the grounds of the Katharinenhospital as part of the re-organisation of the Klinikum Stuttgart. The topping-out ceremony took place today, exactly three years after the foundation stones were laid. The buildings were designed by HPP Architects and are being realised in cooperation with Sorg und Frosch Planungs GmbH. The ensemble of buildings with almost 30,000 m² of space is due to be completed by the end of 2012. The multi-storey pedestal will house the reception, emergency ward, examination areas, operating theatres, laboratories, physiotherapy, staff canteen and conference areas. Six pavilions housing the wards are arranged in a staggered manner on top of the pedestal. The pedestal containing the functional areas and the pavilions will not only differ in their use but also in their external treatment. The structure consists of 3 lower and 7 upper floors in total. Internal courtyards, some glazed, will ensure sufficient light-penetration, all roofs will be greened. An external green axis will provide a patients’ garden on the west side of the building and offer a public space that also serves to smooth the transition between the sloping site and the city park on the opposite side of the Kriegsbergstrasse.
A combined heat and power unit in the basement will provide environmentally-friendly and efficient power to the entire hospital complex. A basement car park will provide 476 spaces. The child/youth-friendly interior design is particularly interesting; it demonstrates how a highly efficient medical centre can also offer an atmosphere appropriate for children and therefore the best surroundings for the successful treatment of the youngest patients.
Bringing both facilities together onto one site enables mothers and children to be treated in the best possible way. The Olgahospital – affectionately known as the Olgaele – is a highly-specialist paediatric medical department from which all expectant mothers who come to the Frauenklinik to give birth also benefit.
