Haus des Buches (The House of the Book)
Client: Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels
: Leipzig
GFA: 12,803 m² / Completion date: 1996 / Awards: Media City Leipzig (registered association) Architecture Prize 1996, Federation of German Architects Award Prize, Saxony 1998, City of Leipzig 1999, Honourable Mention

In 1996, the construction of the Haus des Buches provided the German Booksellers’ Association with a new location which would house their literature centre, publishing companies; a place for cultural exchange. It was constructed on the site of the Buchhändlerhaus (Booksellers’ House) that was largely destroyed in 1943 and re-connects with the tradition of the “Graphic Quarter” in which it is situated. The complex lies close to the heart of the city and consists of a comb-shaped building that opens to the south-west, a slightly misaligned tower and part of the original building on Gerichtsweg. The individual buildings are connected to one another by means of a single-storey, glazed entrance cube.
