The Standard Bank Centre, the administrative headquarters of the Standard Bank of South Africa Limited, lies in the heart of the financial centre of Johannesburg. A building was required that would be accessible via a generously- sited plaza within the tightly-built city of Johannesburg. In order to keep the building mass as light and delicate as possible on the plaza level, it was decided to use a suspended construction. The 139m high building was built as three hanging volumes of nine office floors, each floor above with 5.40m cantilevers houses the air-conditioning plants, a cooling plant and the transformer station.
