As the result of moving Düsseldorf’s exhibition grounds, the insurance company Victoria was able to acquire the former fairgrounds at the Hofgarten between the district seat of government and Ehrenhof in the 1970s. The corporate headquarters of the company has thus been located here since 1986 and is currently being expanded in a fourth stage of construction. A twenty-nine-story office tower was at the center of the first phase of expansion, carried out between 1993 and 1998. The cylindrical building structure, situated between
the open space of the former Golzheimer cemetery and the downtown on Fischerstrasse, constitutes the architectural focus of the urbanistic design. In the third construction phase from 1998 to 2001 a hundred-meter-long building structure was added to the complex along Fischerstrasse within the context of the preexisting urban fabric. The necessity for these expansions was dictated
by the need for additional capacities as well as the merging of different cor-
porate areas in the Düsseldorf location. The current and fourth construction phase complements the main administration of the insurance firm by an aboveground building complex with 158,000 square meters of gross floor area (GFA) offering a total of 4,600 work stations. Between the landmark-protected artist studio and the Victoriaplatz to the south and Klever Strasse to the north, the new 169-meter-long building will be comprised of three elements connected by two glassed-in halls. The transparent and openly designed structure should be completed by 2010.
