The refurbishment required replacing the original ceramic facing tiles with well-proportioned bands of windows containing randomly-placed coloured panes. The permanent sun protection offered by aluminium slats to the win-
dows accentuates the friendly, horizontal aspect of this new façade. The welcoming aspect of the interiors is provided by warm wood-panelling. The centrally-arranged nursing stations form the communications centre of each ward through the use of large panorama windows
The re-location of the reception area, re-designing the entrance foyer with
a central patient admission desk, the accident and emergency unit and the function diagnosis unit were all part of the refurbishment brief.
