competition: 1st Prize 2001

A three-story expansion building based on existing structures was able to provide a design answer with a free form beyond the predefined grids and building sites. Starting from the necessary connection with the preexisting structure, two building wings playfully develop into an enclosed park. The molding of the lean-to roofs was fully exploited, thereby drawing a precise yet gentle boundary of the outer spaces. Depending on the situation, the façades are open and extroverted, or closed and introverted. The imposing number of trees in the Robert Koch Park serves as a starting point for several consider-ations regarding the project’s color concept: autumnal hues, ranging from pale yellow to the deepest of reds, are transferred to the building with verve in lines and surfaces of different intensities on the façades and within the structure’s interior.
