The brief was to provide teaching and research facilities, in the first instance,
for 10 000 humanities, science, medicine and engineering students including
all transport and accommodation facilities. The site was hilly and partly-wooded site, 500 ha. and set in a delightful landscape overlooking the Ruhr Valley. The concept envisaged concentrating construction of a university campus along the edge of the suburb of Querenburg. The wood and cliff areas along the Ruhr River would remain untouched as recreation areas. The core area of the uni-
versity was constructed in less than ten years and consisted of four quarters built in the form of facilities centres arranged in a tape like fashion along the main thoroughfares.
