1st prize in the competition Sohnstraße 45, Düsseldorf

In the urban and landscape design competition for an urban quarter on a four-hectare site in Düsseldorf Düsseltal, HPP convinced the jury and in the public participation process and was awarded 1st prize.

The competition entry together with brandenfels landscape + environment and under involvement of the structural engineers of Bollinger+Grohmann as well as Bartenbach Lighting and BSV Büro für Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung embodies a sustainable, resilient, mixed-use neighborhood for a diverse community in a connected, long-lasting ecosystem. The design supports a DGNB-certified deconstruction of the existing Telekom high-rise, which acts like an urban barrier in the existing neighborhood. Instead, a healthy quarter with lively meeting spaces will be created, linking the adjacent neighborhoods through a small-scale structure and diverse interfaces. The typologies of office, residential, commercial, culture, nursery and care will relate to each other. Overall, this sustainable urban development impulse aims to create added value for the entire neighborhood.

In addition to semi-public and private green spaces and squares, all roofs in the new car-free quarter will be greened and extensively equipped with photovoltaics. The tree coverage on the site can be significantly increased by unsealing the existing structure. An essential part of the concept is the use of sustainable building materials and constructions including recycling of the existing building. In the sense of "re-use" and "urban mining", materials from the existing building are to be retained and reused in the new quarter.

"The winning design creates a lively, diverse and future-oriented neighborhood. A well-thought-out scale, greenery and pathways create very good conditions for a suitable and effective integration and interconnection with the surrounding neighborhoods," says the press release of the State Capital Düsseldorf, which had launched the competition in cooperation with DT Asset Management GmbH (DTAM).
