Commencement of refurbishment work on the Town Hall in Marl

On 2 November 2020 work commences on the first phase of refurbishment of the protected Town Hall in Marl. The two cantilevered high-rise blocks and the central building are to undergo energy optimisation, modernisation of building installations and conversion to a “civic town hall” in line with plans by HPP as general planner and commissioned by the city of Marl.

Following a digital press conference last Thursday the construction sign was unveiled by Mayor Werner Arndt and the head of the city’s planning department, Ms Andrea Baudek. This marked the achievement of another milestone on the way to planned completion in 2024. The ensemble of buildings dating from the 1960s are an important element of Marl’s identity and at the same time represent an architectural expression of the new democratic self-conception of post-war modernism. The building project is an important stimulus for reorientation and regional focus for the city of Marl and in the future it should also offer additional services as a “civic town hall” and represent a central meeting point for the population. “Our experience in similar refurbishment projects ensures that we have the sensitivity required to handle a protected building like that in Marl,” says HPP Senior Partner Gerhard G. Feldmeyer. For the planning with BIM a three-dimensional model was made of the existing building. An extensive article in the specialist architectural magazine Build-Ing offers an insight into the three-dimensional planning.
