First prize for „Middenzaal“, Theater aan het Vrijthof Maastricht

In the coming years, one of the most important venues in the city of Maastricht will be transformed: the renowned Theatre aan het Vrijthof will be expanded with a new central hall. The realisation of the design of HPP Architects, which won first prize in an European competition, is a long-awaited wish for the city and the theatre.

The historic General's House on the Vrijthof is currently the face of the theatre. The central hall, the “Middenzaal”, will anchor the theatre more firmly in the cityscape and strengthen the exchange between programme designers, artists and visitors. Clearly designed as a sculpture, the new theatre hall blends harmoniously into the urban structure of Maastricht, respecting not only the cityscape but also the visual axes and characteristic roofscape of the surrounding buildings. The formal rotation of the Middenzaal towards the existing theatre brings the wide foyer on the street side into focus. This gives visitors a glimpse of what is happening inside the theatre from the outside. The theatre itself has merged with the city, becoming an open and lively urban building component.
