HPP have transformed the centenarian former warehouse into a modern working environment. Prominently located immediately adjacent to Shanghai's finance district, the building stands on a former industrial site, embedded in the green belt of the Huangpu River. The central design element is the new light-filled Atrium in the centre of the building. The two staircases that were originally attached to the façade were dismantled and carried over formally into the central hall. The staircase not only serves as a means of access but also defines the space and connects the two originally isolated, buildings to one another. It also creates a public space for communication and gathering. The design retains the style of the original building while still managing to respond full to the requirements of modern working environments.
