Opening of the varisano Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst

The official opening and handover of keys took place on January 23, 2023 for the world's first hospital building with a passive house certification, the new “varisano Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst”.

At the beginning of February, the move into the state-of-the-art hospital will take place, which offers space for almost 700 beds on a gross floor area of around 79,000 square meters. The centerpiece is the hospital`s operating tract, which includes ten rooms and a hybrid operating theatre for gentle, minimally invasive procedures. Hospitals have enormous energy needs, making it all the more important to focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. The passive house standard is designed to significantly reduce the need for energy. "The new building of the varisano Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst is a unique pilot project worldwide in its combination of energy-saving measures. It is not only the first hospital with a passive house certification, but it is also a maximum-care hospital," emphasizes Björn Bischoff, managing partner of wörner richter traxler planungsgesellschaft mbh. The varisano Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst was already awarded with the passive house certificate in the summer of 2022.

With state-of-the-art equipment, a well thought-out infrastructure and the possibilities of digitalization, many improvements have been created for patients and staff. The third floor belongs solely to expectant and new parents and children. Four delivery rooms, one of them with a birthing bath, are available for the nearly 2,300 births that take place each year. The wards are all equipped with single- and double-bed rooms, each with its own bathroom, and here, too, the passive house standard particularly meets the needs of patients and visitors. The temperature in the patient rooms should be a constant, pleasant 22 degrees. Of course, the windows can be opened, but this is only necessary in certain situations due to integrated internal ventilation. The "Höchster room" is also a special feature of the hospital, which was co-developed by nursing staff. A higher axis dimension makes it possible to move the rear bed out of the room, if necessary, without disturbing the bed neighbor in front. For the elderly patients on the geriatric medicine ward, oversized room numbers, regional room and corridor names, and carefully selected pictorial motifs make orientation easier. The concept of "healing art" can be found, for example, on the walls of the 160-meter-long thoroughfare as well as on individual wards. Structures and details from the world of flowers and plants have a calming effect, reinforcing the feeling of security.

wörner traxler richter planungsgesellschaft mbH is responsible for the architecture of this highly complex large-scale project, while HPP Architekten have taken on the implementation planning.
