Our Cologne HPP team's concept impressed the jury with its minimally invasive intervention in the historic fabric, which respectfully preserves and showcases the monument. The jury also praised the way in which the building addresses the goal of climate neutrality in 2045 and beyond. The design takes into account thoughtful proposals on sustainability issues such as materiality, recyclability, a specific location for the use of recycled materials and the restoration of historic structures. Under the motto 'The monument of the future! From the RWTH initial building (1870) to climate icon', the redevelopment can serve as an example for similar redevelopments and play a pioneering role in the restoration of our architectural heritage.
The results of the competition show a range of interesting ideas for climate-neutral and sustainable refurbishment. And although an implementation is not yet imminent, we and our colleagues from Kempen Krause Hartmann lngenieurgesellschaft mbH, DSTR Planungsgesellschaft GmbH and Greengineers GmbH are delighted with this success and the intensive involvement in this university building of many of our own team members.
