White Arkitekter and HPP entrusted to design the new Medical Clinic of the University Hospital of Tübingen

The concept for the new healthcare building follows a holistic approach to sustainability, focusing on a healing environment for patients and an efficient working environment for the clinic's staff. 

With a clear focus on sustainability, the new medical clinic building is being constructed in a resource-conserving and CO2-reduced manner. Wood, which is used as a key material in the bedroom storeys, in combination with the renewable raw materials for the facade and finishes, ensures significant savings in greenhouse gas emissions. The stored carbon remains bound in the building components over the long term. The ability to dismantle and separate the structures also allows the components to be reused as a whole or returned to the recycling process at a later date. 

The architecture evolves from nature and respects its surroundings. The base area embeds itself unobtrusively into the landscape; above it are building volumes with concise projections. These three upper floors are predominantly home to the care areas. "It was important to us to allow maximum daylight incidence and views of Tübingen and the Swabian Alps. Wooden surfaces in the interior create a soothing atmosphere for patients. And various terraces and gardens give users access to the outdoors," says Gerhard G. Feldmeyer, senior partner at HPP Architekten, explaining the design. 

HPP Architects, White Arkitekter, knippershelbig GmbH, Werner Sobek AG, PGMM Planungsgruppe M+M AG, SINFIRO GmbH & Co. KG (formerly Ingenieurbüro Riesener GbR) and GREENBOX landscape architects were part of the competition team. The client is the Tübingen office of the Landesbetrieb Vermögen und Bau Baden-Württemberg.
