German Football Museum Dortmund

A Museum as a Stage for the Game
The German Football Museum presents the history of Germany’s most popular sport within an architectural setting that makes movement and emotion spatially tangible. The building becomes a stage that carries the myth of football into the urban realm, making it accessible in Germany for the first time outside the usual sporting context.
“We Are Football” – the fitting framework for a compelling exhibition concept
A sculptural cultural element for exhibitions, events and gastronomy
Dynamics and movement as a spatial experience
Façade as projection surface for Germany’s most popular sport
Situated directly opposite Dortmund’s main railway station, the museum marks the beginning of the cultural mile. Its identity forming volume, an elevated box with a wedge-shaped incision, hovers above a transparent, continuous public ground floor. This level extends outward via a “podium”, creating a tangible connection to the exterior space.
The form integrates the dramaturgy of the exhibition concept developed by the Berlin office TRIAD into a continuous spatial sequence. Visitors experience the course of a football match in all its phases at close range. The foyer, fan shop, gastronomy, and the “arena” with areas for temporary exhibitions are located on the ground and basement levels. An escalator leads to the “first and second half”, into which the permanent exhibition is divided across the upper storeys.
The theme of football is communicated externally through a perforated lightweight metal façade. Hexagonal perforations reference the pattern of classic football, complemented by interchangeable banner surfaces and an LED media façade that transforms the building into an urban display.
