Library as an experiential space

With the Medical Specialist Library O.A.S.E. (a Place for Exchange, Study and Development), the campus of the University Hospital Düsseldorf has gained a new communicative hub. Designed as a vertical spatial continuum, the building enables learning and interaction in equal measure.

Vertically organised, horizontally connected

The heterogeneous built surroundings of the clinic campus called for a clear architectural statement. O.A.S.E. responds with an independent formal language and a precise urban placement. As a vertical standalone structure, it organises the medical library across eight levels and becomes a highly visible landmark.

Content as a design motif

The exterior appearance is inspired by the medical theme of a capillary system. White glassmosaic panels alternate with organically shaped glass surfaces, covering the slender volume like a network. The façade’s structure produces a dynamic interplay of light, depth, and movement, giving the building its distinctive identity.

Flowing spatial structures

Inside, the dynamism of the façade continues. Two cylindrical cores one for circulation and one for services structure the floors and create organically shaped spaces with clear orientation. The open plan logic allows flexible use and promotes informal encounters.

Space for exchange and concentration

Alongside classic library functions, O.A.S.E. offers learning spaces, student association areas, a cafeteria, and generous areas for social interaction and events. The roof terrace forms the upper conclusion and opens views across the campus. All levels are organised to support both focused study and social or academic exchange.
