Huairou Science City Living Room Plot A Beijing

Public Space for Knowledge Exchange and Encounter
The Urban Living Room is the central link within Huairou Science City, a place that brings science, culture, and the public together. The concept “public, vibrant, sharing” shapes the architecture and turns the complex into a lively meeting point for research teams and the wider community.
Heart of Huairou Science City as a new address for international scientific networks
Ring‑shaped structure at the centre for public uses
Central green axis as a connecting element between east and west
L‑shaped buildings forming the outer edges with institutes, hotels and offices
Huairou Science City is one of the key platforms in Beijing’s strategy to establish international research centres. Plot A forms the heart of this development and creates a new address for global scientific networks and multidisciplinary high‑tech research. Academies and scientific research buildings are complemented by hotels, offices as well as cultural and leisure facilities, resulting in a multifunctional and active urban space.
Four drop‑shaped buildings are arranged around a circular landscaped space, encircled by a jogging track. Beneath the semi‑transparent roofs lie multifunctional event halls, a theatre and exhibition areas. The open architecture links generous, partly sheltered outdoor spaces for encounters with event and learning rooms for the exchange of knowledge.
The experience ring is framed by four Lshaped buildings accommodating institutes, hotels, and offices. A sunken central green axis connects east and west and forms an urban stage with open staircases, fitness paths, and landscape elements. It links the four Lshaped building complexes along the site boundaries with the inner ring structure, creating a threedimensional urban space and providing clear orientation.
