Quarter "Auf der Friedrichsburg" Münster

Multilayered, cooperative, future‑oriented
The aim of “Auf der Friedrichsburg Münster” is to further develop the former Pluggendorf monastery grounds in all their characteristic diversity and to transform them into a vibrant and attractive urban quarter.
Conversion of a former monastery complex: a new urban fabric combining living, working, and public life
Integrative lead consulting: with its own architectural contribution, HPP brought together the work of six architectural practices and numerous specialist disciplines into a coherent whole
Connecting diversity: three squares, numerous courtyards and a high proportion of greenery link the mixed‑use quarter for different ways of living
Mobility reorganised: a car‑free district with a mobility hub, a large bicycle parking facility, and an underground car park
Sustainable guiding principles: DGNB Platinum targeted for the entire quarter
The project is guided by the aim of enabling a lively sense of community. Around 500 residential units are planned within the new and diverse urban quarters, providing accommodation for families, older residents, single households and students. In addition, the scheme includes offices, childcare facilities, food and beverage uses and local amenities, as well as community spaces that will serve as interconnected places for social exchange within the urban fabric.
“Munich urgently needs more housing for families, students and, not least, for skilled workers who are in high demand locally. We are pleased to be able to contribute to this with the construction project, and we aim to create a neighbourhood with a high quality of life for the people of Münster.”
Ludger Grothues, Memberof the Management Board at LVM
The quarter is organised around a finely balanced system of courtyards and squares. The intention is for green spaces to account for more than one third of the overall site. Three public squares with ample seating, together with landscaped inner courtyards, provide a range of areas with a high quality of stay. In addition, generously designed play areas for children of all age groups - including sandpits, a climbing tree, play mounds, a trampoline and multi‑play elements - further enhance the quality of life within the quarter.
The quarter aims to achieve DGNB Platinum certification and is based on a forward‑looking mobility concept: no through‑traffic for cars, but instead a high‑capacity underground car park, a mobility hub offering services for all interested residents, and a large bicycle garage with around 1,800 spaces.
“The project is a model for forward‑looking urban quarter development: with deliberate use of energetic, ecological, functional, and social synergies and a varied architectural appearance.”
Jörn Herrmann, Associate Partner HPP
Under the lead of HPP as lead consultant, LVM commissioned six architectural practices to design separate building clusters to develop a multifaceted urban quarter on a significant inner‑city site. As architect of record, HPP also designed several central architectural components of the scheme. In its role as integrative lead consultant, HPP coordinated the different designs, each with its own distinct architectural character, and consolidated them into a functional, coherent, approvable and future‑proof urban quarter.
“We applied HPP’s long-standing experience in leading multifunctional teams to design at this special location a quarter of outstanding architectural quality and, above all, inclusive and vibrant living together.”
