Expansion of the C2C LAB Berlin: First GDR prefabricated block renovated according to Cradle to Cradle criteria

The expansion of the C2C LAB was officially opened in Berlin in the presence of around 200 guests from the worlds of politics, construction, planning and academia.

The team at HPP’s Berlin office had provided planning support for the project right up to the submission of the building application, working in close collaboration with C2C NGO. For the extension, additional space in the existing prefabricated block was leased from Gewobag and fitted out by C2C NGO. With the new community hub, the real-world laboratory expands to 500 square metres, creating space to practically test and further develop circular construction methods in existing buildings. The C2C LAB is considered the first prefabricated block from the GDR to be renovated according to Cradle to Cradle criteria.

Following opening speeches by Nora Sophie Griefahn (Executive Director of Cradle to Cradle NGO) and Tim Janßen (Executive Director of Cradle to Cradle NGO), Guido Graul (Head of the Berlin HPP office) emphasised in his welcoming remarks how important circularity is for architectural planning. A distinctive feature of the C2C LAB is the testing of new C2C systems under real-world conditions. Three newly developed C2C-compatible floor structures demonstrate how existing standards can be precisely refined to enable the practical application of circular construction. The expansion strengthens the C2C LAB as a hub for exchange, research and collaboration, and offers new opportunities for workshops and events.
