1st place for urban study „Südliche Wöhlerstraße, Leverkusen-Wiesdorf“

For the urban development study "Südliche Wöhlerstraße - Leverkusen-Wiesdorf", the contribution of HPP Architekten in cooperation with +grün Landschaftsarchitektur, was unanimously awarded first place by the jury and is now the basis for subsequent urban land use planning.

The main idea of the design is to connect the heritage-protected quarter “Anna II” with the city centre of Leverkusen. Five urban development strategies have been developed, which essentially improve the traffic situation, mediate between the contrasting urban structures, create a high-quality entrance to the city with a high point, and transform the former backyard into a green inner courtyard. The design consists of two open blocks which, through their design and staggered heights, mediate between the heterogeneous neighbourhoods, create a new passage and provide sufficient space for green neighbourhood squares. The transformation of Wöhler Strasse into Wöhler Allee aims to calm traffic by giving priority to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. The design also includes a mobility hub and e-charging zones. Ground-floor spaces – including a florist, pharmacy and yoga studio – reflects the new understanding of the quarter with a focus on healthy living. In terms of sustainability, the design includes the use of recycled building materials and a hybrid timber construction. Extensive use of photovoltaics will help the new neighbourhood to achieve a positive energy balance, and the south-facing orientation will allow for passive houses, energy-plus houses or solid construction houses without heating systems.
